Publications about Insects and Insect Respect

Their topics range from Insects and ecological alternatives to conventional insect control to the innovative encounter between business and art during the art action „saving flies“.
Progess Report ‘Biodiversity in Good Company’ Initiative
Together one reaches more - and that quicker. For that reason the company Reckhaus continuously starts new cooperations and supports with Insect Respect and through its network the Lobby for insects. The ‘Biodiversity in Good Company’ Initiative is such a network where companies pool their capacities to protect biodiversity. The initiative recognises and supports the three goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity:
1) The conservation of biodiversity,2) the sustainable use of its components and3) to acknowledge and support a fair distribution of the benefits of using genetic resources
The members of the ‘Biodiversity in Good Company’ initiative publish a progress report every two years to show that biodiversity is still a priority in their decision making.

Dr. Hans Dietrich Reckhaus (2019): Insect Respect.
9th, revised edition
«Das Gütezeichen für einen neuen Umgang mit Insekten.» Gais, Bielefeld: Insect Respect.
The documentation about Insect Respect introduces the quality seal and offers insight into the organisation's origins: In 2011, instigated by the conceptual artists Frank and Patrik Riklin, the biocide entrepreneur Dr. Hans-Dietrich Reckhaus asked himself «What's the value of a fly?». Their response: Save, don't kill. Thus, the idea of a scientific model was born which calculates insect loss through biocides for home use and to compensate the loss by establishing insect-friendly habitats outdoors. This book explains the philosophy and model and makes Insect Respect's concrete activities visible through which the organisation sensitises society for the value and benefit of Insects.
The author Dr. Hans-Dietrich Reckhaus ist CEO of Reckhaus GmbH & Co. KG in Bielefeld (Germany) and of Reckhaus AG in Gais (Switzerland). For 60 years the company has been specialised in development and production of insect control products. By founding Insect Respect, the company starts its transformation from a manufacturer of chemical products towards a supplier of ecological services.

Anniversary brochure:
10 years 'Biodiversity in Good Company' initiative
Because of Reckhaus' commitment to saving insects with Insect Respect the company became a member of the 'Biodiversity in Good Company' initiative. The members are companies, such as REWE, Ritter Sport and HeidelbergCement, which consistently champion biodiversity protection and conservation. The anniversary brochure was published in late 2018. It shows milestones of the members' best practice examples from the last decade, among others from Reckhaus.
Svenja Schulze, Federal Minister for the Environment, congratulated on the initiative's 10 year anniversary: "I appreciate it very much that the member companies fight for an economy which respects the limits of nature and environment. They live up to their societal responsibility and show with practical examples the different possibilities companies have when it comes to protecting biodiversity. This deserves respect and encourages imitation!"

A Documentation about the Value and Endangerment of Insects. Springer Verlag.
"Warum jede Fliege zählt“ was published in English by Springer publishing house under the title „Why Every Fly Counts“ in summer 2017.
"The publications of Insect Respect are unique: They do not discuss single aspects like biotechnology or beneficial insects or pests, they rather show the important role of this animal group in the whole balance of ecosystems. This kind of literature really bridges a gap in the market."
Prof. Dr. Stanislav N. Gorb, Zoological Institute, Functional Morphology and Biomechanics, Kiel University
"This is an important book in the age of unrestrained bees and insects dying. It is based on well investigated examples and demonstrates the importance of insects in their various functions for life on this planet as well as the fact that they can be unpleasent for humans. Thus their benefits for humans and ecosystems are presented as well as the dangers, which they can cause in their role as disease carriers or parasites for humans. Insects play a key role in the fine-tuned processes and the resilience of ecological processes that are essential for the preservation of an environment beneficial to human beings. However this balance was destroyed by human activities, such as the industrialized agriculture, where large amounts of insecticides are used. This book is not just an appeal to change our behaviour: In another publication (title: „Insect Respect“) the author points out ways to handle this challenge."
Dr. Angelika Hilbeck, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Institute of Integrative Biology IBZ, ETH Zürich
